Vietnam server
1.
preparation phase: confirm test goals and environment
- clear goal: determine whether the native ip of vietnam vps meets the bandwidth and latency requirements of localized services (such as local user response, api hosting) and external api calls.- environment inventory: record the vps model, cpu, memory, network type (bare metal/virtualized), operating system, whether the public ip is native ipv4/ipv6, and whether it has gone through nat/cgnat.
- tool preparation: install iperf3, mtr/traceroute, curl, wrk/ab, tcpdump, ping, ss/iftop on vps and test side. make sure the firewall allows the iperf3 port (default 5201) and the ports required for testing.
2.
step 1 - basic connectivity and latency testing
- command example: execute ping -c 10 from local machine- routing troubleshooting: execute mtr -r -c 100
- judgment point: if single-hop packet loss is high or jitter is obvious, contact the vps provider first or change the line; localized services usually require one-way delay < 100ms (<30ms in vietnam).
3.
step 2 - bandwidth throughput test (iperf3)
- start the server on the vps: iperf3 -s (run in background or screen).- run the client locally or at another test point: iperf3 -c
- interpretation: pay attention to average bandwidth, jitter and retransmission rate. if there are many tcp retransmissions, it may be a packet loss or mtu problem. try increasing the mtu or adjusting the tcp window (--socket-buffer).
4.
step 3 - high concurrent api call performance test
- tool: wrk or apachebench(ab). example wrk -t4 -c200 -d60s http://- test dimensions: number of concurrent connections, requests per second (rps), average/95/99th percentile response time, error rate. record the tcp connection establishment time and tls handshake time (curl -w can be used if https is enabled).
- recommendation: gradually increase concurrency and observe the inflection point to ensure that the cpu, memory and network bandwidth of the vps are not bottlenecks; if tls is time-consuming, it is recommended to enable keep-alive and http/2.
5.
step 4 - actual api call link and dns resolution test
- dns test: dig +stats <domain name>, check whether the resolution chain is in vietnam or close to the line; if the dns resolution is slow, it will affect the delay of the first api call.- api link test: use curl -w "%{time_connect} %{time_starttransfer} %{time_total}\n" -o /dev/null -s https://<domain name>/api to record tcp establishment, first byte time, and total delay.
- localization suggestions: place dns and api nodes in vietnam as much as possible or use nearby cdn/anycast to reduce the number of resolution and routing hops.
6.
step 5 - packet loss, jitter and mtu diagnosis
- packet loss location: use mtr for long-term observation, or add -u (udp) to iperf3 to test jitter.- mtu detection: use ping -m do -s
- repair suggestions: adjust the vps network card mtu or unpack at the application layer, and contact the operator to resolve the link mtu issue if necessary.
7.
step 6 - multi-time and multi-point testing to ensure the stability of results
- time distribution: run a complete test each time during different peak and valley periods (peak days on weekdays, early morning, and weekends) to record fluctuations.- multi-location testing: execute the same script from multiple domestic provinces, local nodes in vietnam, and target customer networks, and compare differences to evaluate regional experience.
- automation: write a shell script to execute iperf3/curl/wrk regularly and upload logs to a centralized location, and use grafana/prometheus to monitor historical trends.
8.
step 7 - interpret test results and set decision thresholds
- threshold examples: average rtt <100ms, packet loss <1%, and stable bandwidth reaching 80% of the commitment are considered qualified; api p95 response <300ms is considered good, and it can be more stringent depending on the business.- report key points: list the peak and average, p95/p99, error rate, retransmission rate and time period distribution, and give improvement suggestions (change the computer room, open a direct connection, use cdn or optimize the application layer).
- contract/sla: use test data as a basis for negotiation with the vps provider, requiring repair of link problems or replacement of ip segments.
9.
step 8 - list of optimization suggestions (practical)
- network layer: enable tcp fastopen, adjust tcp window, enable gso/tso and other performance features; apply for a dedicated line or direct connection to a vietnamese operator if possible.- application layer: enable http keep-alive, http/2, compression, response caching and current limiting; implement connection pooling and retry strategies for apis and monitor them.
- security and compliance: ensure that the native ip is not blacklisted. if it affects external api calls, it needs to be cleaned up; explain the compliance of vietnamese user data.
10.
q: how to quickly verify whether the "native ip" of vietnam vps is actually directly connected to the vietnamese operator?
answer: use mtr or traceroute to observe the first hop and exit hop. if the outbound hop is in vietnam's local asn and the delay is low (domestic to the vps is less than 30ms), it can basically be judged as a direct connection. at the same time, use whois to check the ip ownership and asn, and confirm with the provider's reply.11.
q: in api concurrency testing, how to distinguish whether it is a vps bandwidth bottleneck or an application bottleneck?
answer: during the concurrent test, the network bandwidth (iftop/nload), cpu, memory and disk io of the vps are simultaneously monitored. if the network reaches the upper limit and the cpu is low, it is a bandwidth bottleneck; if the cpu/io is close to saturation, it is an application bottleneck, and the program should be optimized or vertically expanded first.12.
q: what are the highest priority actions i should take when test results are unstable?
answer: priority: 1) confirm whether it is a vps native public network problem (contact the merchant and provide mtr/iperf logs); 2) repeat testing with different clients at different times to eliminate temporary network fluctuations; 3) temporarily enable cdn or a nearby proxy to reduce the impact of fluctuations on users.
